Aaron shall cast lots for the two goats, designating one goat for the Lord and the other one for the scapegoat.[a] Aaron shall take the goat upon which the Lord’s lot fell and shall offer it as a sin offering. 10 But the goat upon which the lot fell to be the scapegoat shall be presented alive before the Lord, to make atonement upon it, and to send it out into the wilderness as the scapegoat.

  1. Leviticus 16:8 The Hebrew text has “azazel” for scapegoat. This was the name of a demon which the ancient Hebrews and the Canaanites believed dwelled in the barren wilderness, that is, in a place where God did not exercise his fructifying activity.
